Description
Inspired by the excitement surrounding leaked Gen III beta sprites, Pokémon Beta Emerald: Down + Dirty is a completed ROM hack that integrates these rare, early designs into Pokémon Emerald. This project is intended as a straightforward, nostalgic experience with no plans for additional features, as it achieves the original goal of incorporating the beta sprites. I will address any game-breaking bugs that might appear, though given the scope of changes, I don’t anticipate major issues.
In Short
This is a straightforward ROM hack designed for those who want to experience a game with Gen III beta sprites and Pokémon. It’s not intended to be groundbreaking—just a fun project I made for myself and thought others might enjoy. Feel free to extract and use the beta sprites for your own projects (excluding my Easter Egg Pokémon). Since the beta sprites are already processed for this hack, extracting full sprite sheets should be simpler than assembling them from scratch. Enjoy!

Features
Pokémon
- Replaced standard Pokémon sprites with Gen III beta sprites.
- Substituted Pokémon that didn’t make the final games with similar Pokémon, using new English names inspired by their appearance and limited leak data (some may be hit or miss—you decide!).
- Beta Pokémon maintain the types, stats, and moves of the Pokémon they replaced, with a few specific exceptions (see documentation).
- Selection aimed for similarity in type and theme to retain consistency (see documentation).
- Replaced all Pokémon menu icons with a colored Pokéball icon that matches each Pokémon’s primary type.
- The entire Hoenn Dex is obtainable, with new encounters for previously missing Pokémon (locations detailed in documentation).
- Slight map adjustments to accommodate new Pokémon encounters.
- Easter egg Pokémon from my upcoming ROM hack are included as hidden extras. The documentation reveals which Pokémon were replaced but keeps their identities secret.
Quality of Life
- Running indoors is now possible after acquiring running shoes.
- Trade evolutions happen at level 38; stone evolutions occur at level 40.
Excluded Features
- No Fairy type.
- No Physical/Special split.
- Not all 386 Pokémon are obtainable.
- Shiny odds remain unchanged.
- No further quality-of-life features will be added.
- Beta sprites are largely unaltered (only adjusted when essential).
- Back sprites were not created for beta Pokémon lacking them; instead, front sprites were mirrored.
- Shiny sprites are unavailable for beta Pokémon.
- Removed Pokémon sprite animations will not be re-added.
